A grainy video showing a plane that appeared to be on fire Friday evening sparked a flurry of concerned calls to Sunwing Airlines — but no actual blaze was reported.
The airline’s president, Stephen Hunter, said the orange light seen emanating from the plane in a video released by CP24 may have been the aircraft’s landing gear reflected in the fog.
“There was never any flames coming out of any one of our planes,” Mr. Hunter said.
Though a Sunwing plane was forced to make an emergency landing at Pearson Airport on Friday because of “fuel irregularities,” he said, the plane in the CP24 video was a different flight altogether, something the company recognized because the two aircraft were different colours.
“We’ve had thousands of people calling in saying, ‘What’s going on?’ It took us awhile to figure it out,” Mr. Hunter said.
The plane that made the emergency landing touched down safely, according to Peel police and the Greater Toronto Airports Authority — and fire crews were not needed.
